What is the volumetric weight?

Light but bulky shipments take up cargo space. That is why carriers charge not the actual weight, but the chargeable weight – the higher value of actual and volumetric weight. The volumetric weight converts the volume via a transport-mode-specific Divisor into a chargeable weight.

Volumetric weight (kg) = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ Divisor
Chargeable weight = max( actual weight , volumetric weight )
Mode of transportDivisorcorresponds to
Air freight (IATA)1 : 6000167 kg/m³
Courier / Express / Parcel1 : 5000200 kg/m³
Road / LTL1 : 3000333 kg/m³
Sea freight (LCL)1 : 10001000 kg/m³

Guideline values for common practice. Individual carriers use different divisors – when in doubt, check the freight contract.
